W. Dean Bickel's Flintlock Hobby

Over many years of traveling to historical sites, I was always intrigued with the muzzleloader or flintlock presentations.

I hunted pheasant and rabbit on my grandfather's farm near Reading as a teenager with an old doublebarrel, hammerpull shotgun.

But the flintlock was the musket or rifle of choice from the 1600's to the early 1800's.

The Lancaster area served as the hub for early German gunsmiths during the colonial and revolutionary war periods.

I have a small collection of muskets and rifles from the late 1700's and early 1800's that I display and present.

I own a reproduction frontier longrifle that I use for target shooting and live fire demonstrations.

Over the past few years I have made presentations on the long rifle to local historical organizations, service clubs and men's retirement groups.

I prepared a powerpoint presentation that describes the development of the flintlock rifle and black powder.

Join us at the Hartzel-Straussburger Homestead located next to our development for a festival or open house.

I am often participating in the reenactment presentations with my rifles.

In 2014 the Pennsylvania state legislature designated the Pennsylvania Long Rifle as a state symbol.
